Il mesure 4,34 m\u00e8tres de hauteur et il est tir\u00e9 d\u2019un bloc de marbre blanc de Carrare, laiss\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019abandon apr\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e9chec d\u2019autres sculpteurs. Michel-Ange a su tirer parti de l\u2019\u00e9troitesse du bloc de marbre et contourner un de ses d\u00e9fauts (une br\u00e8che dans laquelle il a creus\u00e9 l\u2019espace entre le bras droit et le torse).
